Battle For The Net

If you woke up tomorrow, and your internet looked like this, what would you do? Imagine all your favorite websites taking forever to load, while you get annoying notifications from your ISP suggesting you switch to one of their approved “Fast Lane” sites.Think about what we would lose: all the weird, alternative, interesting, and enlightening stuff that makes the Internet so much cooler than mainstream Cable TV. What if the only news sites you could reliably connect to were the ones that had deals with companies like Comcast and Verizon?On September 10th, just a few days before the FCC’s comment deadline, public interest organizations are issuing an open, international call for websites and internet users to unite for an “Internet Slowdown” to show the world what the web would be like if Team Cable gets their way and trashes net neutrality. Net neutrality is hard to explain, so our hope is that this action will help SHOW the world what’s really at stake if we lose the open Internet.If you’ve got a website, blog or tumblr, get the code to join the #InternetSlowdown here: else, here’s a quick list of things you can do to help spread the word about the slowdown: Get creative! Don’t let us tell you what to do. See you on the net September 10th!

Hey- We’re still at it-

—Just been so busy on so many fronts that we don’t take the time to come here and document things as often as we used to.
Elise in Glacier Valley

Elise in Glacier Valley

—We did some work in ‘Glacier Valley, made the puddle a bit deeper in a couple places, Brought in a new blond building character and let her go splashing around without looking like she got wet at all- There is still a spinning vortex off a cliff that might be the only obvious way out of here- until we pop in a few mines that are still on the drawing board.

Sunday, January 13, 2013….

Kaelyn, in the rain-

Kaelyn, in the rain-

Hi, let’s see how copy and paste are doing….

(((—Ack, not so good- I had to go back in and add all the paragraph breaks. grumble grumble grumble…. )))

Sunday, January 13, 2013. 4˚C / 39˚F @ 2:30 pm. Well, hubbudah.

Here we are, 13 days into the year 2013 and gaaaaa- I have no idea what that means.

Let’s see, I’ve been crashed out of my world building (game creating) software three times this morning- no, four times. I’m trying to get the edges of 4 smallish areas to mesh so when the game goes live nobody will be running around, minding their own business, then wooosh, they fall right through the world and are lost forever, drifting, falling ever down down down through the deepest lost hells of virtual nothing-ness.

Right now, Kaelyn, my newest builder character. is trying to stand still in the air a couple feet above the ground, because the world is meshing in the back ground and taking forever to do so, and the last thing I did was smooth the slope beneath her feet. Every minute or so the server does its adjustment and reports back, rewriting data to the repository. And the last thing it will do is save the information about the hill she was standing on and she will drop a couple of feet, land without hurting herself and I’ll know that all the very complex routines have taken their course and I can go back in and do some further modifications without losing these critical changes I just made. (changes I’ve partially lost several times already.)

Would your gaming experience be spoiled if you realized that the solid ground your characters are standing on is less than a pixel thick? I’m looking at very solid looking rocky ground that I ‘created’ here and the illusion is pretty darned good if you ask me. I’m continually amazed at how good this world looks. And I am nowhere near finished. I’m also amazed at how good the characters look and these are just demo characters, I still have to learn the deep down ins and outs of how to define what any game subscribers will be able to get and how much they will be able to modify their characters.

Kaelyn’s supposed to look like a half elf. She does. She looks Irish. But the joke has been, “What do you call a good looking blond in Ireland?” “A tourist” And she’s beautiful. (slightly pointed ears and all) ((And she’s still hovering a couple feet above the virtual ground she should be standing on.))

The World Didn’t End…

Saturday, December 22, 2012 Chilly w/blowing snow in snowed under Ottawa Region-

Dhoreena With Elf-ish ears.

Dhoreena With Elf-ish ears.

With the newest upgrade to the game development ‘blade’ I was able to mess with the characters’ ears and stuff a lot easier than before. (The speed trees disappeared from this scene, this world and I think every other world, I have to go read the wiki to find out what that is all about.)

Here she is, looking more or less right at us.

Here she is, looking more or less right at us.

She looks like she’s thinking about something maybe a little bit mischievous from this angle.

She Lost her elf ears when I closed the morphing app....

She Lost her elf ears when I closed the morphing app….

Here she is, sort of back to normal.

I need to go read stuff on the developers’ forums etc.

Mumble mumble mumble mumble…

But- she doesn’t look too upset about being able to pass for human. (I would….)

~~~~~Jim (P.S. I did finish my NaNoWriMo 50,000 word (plus) novel in the 30 days we had to do that…. more like 25 days, I started late. –Finished with like half an hour to spare.)
See, here's my reward for writing 50,000 words in 25 days.
New Version of the Game Editing Stuff / New Character
Friday, December 21, 2012 (Should I be at an wend of the world party? Nahhhhh-)
New Character- Kaelyn Looks Irish (or maybe part Elf?)
New Character- Kaelyn Looks Irish (or maybe part Elf?)
After Downloading the upgrade I realized I have to go read stuff online, but before I got there I tried to ‘roll’ a new character. Colours seem to be really washed out, blue leather pants look black to me- but I was really pleased to learn that I could morph her face into a more Elf-like look without having ears that stuck out a foot from each side of her face.
Yeah, I should be reading new version notes or something, -but maybe I should wait and see if any of the end of the world-ers go nuts and do anything stupid in the next couple hours.
Still Out Here Still Doing Stuff-
Twitter Header. (I am not the most prolific Twitter Tweeter and probably never will be)
It’s probably about time I added something to this.
(Going to upgrade work horse computer next week (Annual Xmas Bonus Time).
& When NaNoWriMo month is over I’ll probably drive everybody nuts with many too many daily posts and all that.
Tuesday, September- oh no 2001 was a Tuesday.
But- @ 9:50 am – It’s 12˚C / 54˚F Outside of Ottawa and…
We Have a Half Ghardran (Half Goblin?)
Probably can’t get any closer to a real Ghardran until we can give ’em green rubbery skin and make them look pitiful and weak and mean and scary all at once.
Doug tried to get one of the Cat People to look more like a Fox person. Whattaya think?
Probably need another perspective here-
There’s another shot coming, but here’s our maybe prototype Faax.
Oh Gaa, let me go mess with the last shot I got of this guy…
We tried to get a couple comparison shots while we were both online. After much maneuvering, this is one of those…
I Still think he looks more like a fox than you can tell from this shot, but until we get some more, or from a better angle… This will have to do.
More Races Depicted:
This guy’s a “Delvahrian”.
Doug gave us a Delvahrian, (I don’t want to call them Dwarves.) They all belong to the miner’s guild. They have fist fights over the finer points of their chosen religious views. And they came pre-loaded in the demo game software.
I built an area for forest elves. It looks like it might be a good place for miners. That’s where this guy is standing. We added some grass, trees and shrubs today…
Doug rolled us up (and tweaked) a Forest Elf Woman in a rather modest ‘doublet’.
Forest Elf Woman. In the same area as the Delvahrian above. Well, she’s across the river.
Working name for this area is “Vallhalla Valley”.
The Delvahrian guy is most of the way up the green hill, up near the shrubs.
And Volffe came in to do some gardening….
I thought I was doing good when I managed to make this guy look like a half elf.
And it’s fun to show off… Catya updated her ‘blade’ to come in and see what we’ve done lately.
Catya standing guard while Volffe is doing something in the bush behind her.
And the last screen shot for today…
Water Sports?
Too bad we don’t have musical instruments. Catya’s got a really nice voice. 🙂
New Races Attempted
Early Early Ayem of Saturday, September 8, 2012. 18˚C /64˚F @3:33 am near Ottawa.
Doug has been busy.
An Ymmp! I had pretty much given up on this for now, but Doug figured it out, with what we have before we really get started on that stuff.
Like I said above, Doug figured out how to ‘create’ an Ymmp after I’d given up thinking we could even attempt that stuff at this point in time.
The tail isn’t quite right, and we need to come up with skin textures, but hey- This is cool.
Ymmps are supposed to have short, stubby tails that are strong enough so they can sit back on their tails and rock back and forth. They have thick skin and can change the texture at will from soft to tough, and as they get older, their hide gets tougher.
But look what’s next:
Gremlin. A real live Gremlin 🙂
Again, the tail isn’t quite right and the skin needs to have some weird colours and textures… but WOW! This is fantastic. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Gremlin without the hat. This character has quirks and cannot be the final product (Look at the neck). But I’m amazed and yes, Doug’s on the right track.
Cathi says this guys’ facial expression looks like Moe’s (our cat) when we tried to give him a bath.
A Forest Elf:
Forest Elf Guy.
The ears are a little too much, and he looks way too much like members of my real life human family… But wow, again.
Forest Elf in a greener background.
My vision of Forest Elves has them a bit more robust than “Highe Elves” (and I may call them something other than Forest Elves (I had thought of “Silvari” or “Silvani”).
All racial names are pretty much tentative as we’re building.
‘Highe Elf” guy.
‘Highe Elves’ are a whole lot less interested in brute force than magick. But they also brag that they’ve never been conquered. Doug said he gave this guy some kind of Warrior armour. It looks pretty good, but I’m guessing it’s not iron or steel. Maybe enchanted something or other.
Closer shot of the Highe Elf.
The ears are almost okay on this guy, Highe Elves or whatever I end up calling them do have the characteristic pointed ears, but not quite this pointed.
{{ Edit Early Morning September 8, 2012 Raining pretty hard up here near Ottawa…}}
After Both Doug and I thought the face above was a little too thin and weird looking, he went back and messed with the character a little more to come up with:
Highe Elf W/Face Fixed?
Doug widened this guy’s face and lengthened his nose and did a couple other things that make him a little less weird looking… I think so, anyway.
